About This Tea

Dong Fang Hong is one of the most renowned cultivars in the Phoenix Dancong family. The mother bush, known locally as the No. 1 Song variety, is said to have been planted in the late Southern Song Dynasty, making it over 700 years old. This ancient tree belongs to the Huang Zhi Xiang (Yellow Twig) fragrance type and is considered one of the representative aroma types of Fenghuang Dancong tea.

The tea has many local names, including “Song Tea,” “Spirit on the Rock” (岩上珍), “Unity Tree” (团树叶), and “Chairman’s Tea” (主席茶). The most common story among tea farmers is that in 1955, tea master Wen Yongji from Wudong Mountain crafted 2 kilograms of Song Tea and gifted it to Chairman Mao. In honor of him, the tea was named “Dong Fang Hong” (The East is Red).

While legends vary, what remains constant is the tea’s prestige and the respect it holds in Chaozhou and beyond.
