There was no pruning, no fertilising, and no human interference. The tea bushes were left to grow freely, following nature’s own rhythm. In this quiet wilderness, the Jin Mudan bushes had taken deep root in mineral-rich rocky soil, surrounded by the cool breath of Wuyi’s high mountain mists. Their leaves seemed to carry the fragrance of time itself.

This tea is made entirely by hand, through a process known as shou gong (手工). Every stage reflects the care and dedication of the tea maker. During oxidation, rather than using machines, we gently spread each batch of leaves across flat bamboo sieves. We turn the leaves by hand, feeling their changing texture and carefully guiding their gradual transformation.

There is something particularly distinctive about this tea: its flavour has a powerful, distinctive character that strongly reminds me of Phoenix Dan Cong from Chaozhou. Mr Zhou first learned the craft of tea making by producing Dan Cong tea from his family’s tea gardens. As a result, this entirely handmade Jin Mudan carries subtle traces of the Dan Cong tradition in both its processing techniques and style.

Here in Wuyishan, experienced tea makers know that Jin Mudan is a particularly challenging cultivar to process well. Even a slight misjudgment during production can result in excessive bitterness and astringency, preventing the tea from expressing its full aromatic and flavour potential.

Yet this handmade Jin Mudan has truly impressed me. Both its aroma and flavour are outstanding. It offers a rich, captivating fragrance and a full-bodied liquor with plenty of strength and character. In my opinion, this is an exceptional tea, one that deserves to be savoured slowly and appreciated in depth.

Making tea in this way requires exceptional skill, extensive experience, and great patience to achieve the right balance. A misjudgment at even one stage can compromise the quality of the entire batch. Combined with the rarity of the raw material, this makes the final yield very limited. Every cup embodies the untamed beauty of this mountain wilderness, as well as the tea maker’s dedication to traditional craftsmanship.

Truly wild Jin Mudan is exceptionally rare. Finding tea made entirely by hand that also expresses such remarkable aroma and flavour is rarer still.

If you enjoy aromatic oolongs with a powerful body, depth of flavour, and a distinctive character, I highly recommend this handmade wild Jin Mudan. It is not only an exceptional tea, but also a reflection of a forgotten mountain landscape and the unique skills and experience of the tea maker.

Aroma and Flavour

This hand-made Jin Mudan opens with the scent of oats, honey and red fruit, deepening into spiced warmth that feels both comforting and elegant. It grows wild at 1000 metres among the same cliffs that nurture old-bush Shui Xian. Every leaf is shaped by hand, with no mechanical aid, guided only by my senses. The result is an extraordinarily pure tea. Vibrant, aromatic, and lingering with layers of spice, fruit, and honey that speak of wild mountain air and ancient stone.

For those seeking authentic Chinese tea made with rare skill and reverence for nature, this Jin Mudan is one of the finest expressions of Wuyi’s soul.

https://www.wuyiorigin.com/products/2026-hand-made-wild-jin-mudan-%e6%89%8b%e5%b7%a5%e9%87%91%e7%89%a1%e4%b8%b9
